How to Talk to a Loved One About Nursing Home Abuse

ElderLaw4

It is extremely frustrating when your loved one is in a nursing home and you suspect they are the victim of abuse or neglect. Although this is a very difficult time, many people soon learn that speaking to their loved one about the suspected abuse is challenging, as well.

Victims of abuse often feel shame and anger. They may even feel as though they are to blame for the abuse. This is true of victims of nursing home abuse, as well. If you suspect your loved one is being abused or neglected, below are some tips that can help you start a conversation with your family member.

Starting the Conversation

Starting a conversation about nursing home abuse is not easy, and you and your loved one may feel uncomfortable. The best way to start the conversation is to ask your loved one questions about any suspected abuse. Ask how they sustained an injury, or what is causing the change in their behavior. Also ask if there is any way you can help them out of the situation. While these questions may seem relatively simple, they may open the door to further conversations and make your loved one feel as though they can talk about the situation with you.

Listen

Learning that your loved one has been a victim of abuse or neglect is infuriating. You may have many questions you want to ask, even if that means interrupting your loved one. Resist the urge to do it. It is often very difficult for loved ones to talk about the abuse so, if they start talking, just listen without interruption or showing emotions such as anger or pity. If your loved one sees that you are willing to listen, they will know that you believe them and are just there to support them.

Talk About the Next Steps

After your loved one has told you what happened, start outlining the next steps you should take together. Explain to them that they have resident’s rights, and that you will help them report the abuse and find alternative care elsewhere. Also talk to them about contacting a lawyer that can ensure their rights are upheld. Most importantly, emphasize the fact that you are going to be with them every step of the way so they know they will not be alone.
